After a couple weeks off from the team’s last event in Enid, Oklahoma the Over Bored crew headed east for the first Monster Truck Throwdown event of 2017. It would also be both Throwdown and the team’s first ever visit to Piedmont Dragway in Julian, North Carolina. The venue is used to high horsepower but on this weekend the monster trucks brought some of a different variety.
Team owner and regular Over Bored driver Jamey Garner would be unable to make the trip to Julian, but he found a top notch replacement for himself with Sean Duhon stepping in for the weekend. Jay Beckner would also be on hand to jump behind the wheel of Wild Side for the occasion. The first of two shows got underway on Friday night with the wheelie contest. It was there that Wild Side suffered a broken rear inner axle which unfortunately sideline the truck for the night. Duhon and Over Bored would go on to a solid night of their own though as they put together a solid pair of wheelies. Following the wheelie contest would be racing where Duhon was fast and smooth over the long two jump straightline track where they would work their way into the finals and take the racing victory for the night. In freestyle Duhon put together a good run with some nice air, but didn’t have quite enough to battle for the win with a third place result.
After a long day of working on both trucks, Duhon and Beckner were back with Wild Side and Over Bored ready for action on Saturday night. Thankfully for Beckner, the wheelie contest went much better on Saturday night as the truck performed without issue for a pair of solid wheelies. Duhon and Over Bored would wow the crowd with an awesome tailgate dragging slap wheelie on his first attempt. He looked to find the same bounce again on the second attempt but didn’t quite get it to work in his favor. The first wheelie would score them well but not well enough to take the victory. In racing it would be a round one exit for Wild Side, but Over Bored looked strong once again. Duhon would work his way through the brackets once more to the final round to face off with Dirt Crew. Much like the night before, it would be another racing win for Duhon and Over Bored as they would take the victory by a truck length.
Freestyle saw the skies open up as the trucks were set to take the track as rain got increasingly heavier as the event progressed. Wild Side got off to a good start with some nice air but would find electrical issues halfway through their performance which cut their efforts short. For Over Bored, it would be another good freestyle run from Duhon with some big air leaps and a great donut as well but the score once again landed them in third place. All in all though it was a good outing for the team on their first visit to Piedmont Dragway and their first Monster Truck Throwdown event of the season.
