It would also be both Throwdown and the team’s first ever visit to Piedmont Dragway in Julian, North Carolina. The venue is used to high horsepower but on this weekend the monster trucks brought some of a different variety. Read more →

First Quarter of 2015 is in full swing and the Over Bored Monster Truck team have been on a roll to start off the new year. After a solid outing in Southaven with the Toughest Monster Truck Tour, driver Jamey Garner and company headed to Bossier City, Louisiana for the Monster Nation event at the CenturyLink Center.
Bossier City would be an awesome stop for the Over Bored team as they racked up some big wins for their first of the year. On Friday night Over Bored was working great as Jamey was able to take out both Wild Thang and Quad Chaos as they moved into the finals against Bigfoot. Garner gave it his all but was unable to defeat Dan Runte and the new Bigfoot 21. Garner would get his first win of the season in freestyle though, as he rocked the house with a big air run that thrilled the fans and judges alike. What better way to follow up one win, than with another? That’s exactly what Garner did on Saturday night as he pulled off the weekend sweep of freestyle with another win!
The following weekend took the Over Bored team west to Rio Rancho, New Mexico for the Toughest Monster Truck Tour at the Santa Ana Center. The weekend didn’t go quite to plan after the strong showing in Bossier City as the crew chased mechanical issues with the truck all weekend. Despite the issues Garner manged to put together some solid performances, and laid down a great freestyle Saturday night, finishing second in the freestyle competition.
The next stop on the Toughest Monster Truck tour takes the Over Bored team back to Salina, Kansas on February 6th and 7th for the second year in a row. We’re looking forward to getting back on track and going after some wins after a weekend off. Thanks to Matt Ison and Rocky Koberna for the photos!
The past four weeks for the Over Bored Monster Truck team can be summed up in one word, busy. As the month of June came to a close the summer season kicked into high gear as the team joined up with the Monster Truck Throwdown tour for a string of four stops in three weekends. The first stop brought them to Berlin Raceway in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area for a Night of Destruction where the team put on an exhibition alongside Nitemare, Reckless Drivin’, and Barbarian for a night of thrills.
From Berlin Raceway they traveled north to beautiful St. Ignace, Michigan for a return trip to Kewadin Casino. Last year in St. Ignace was one of the team’s first ever events and the weekend would be a marker showing the great progress both driver Jamey Garner and the team have made in one year. While in St. Ignace the team worked on carving a new set of tires for the truck, putting in countless hours of work into each tire to make gains in the trucks’ overall performance. On Saturday Garner delivered a strong performance in front of a packed house at Kewadin Casino. While he didn’t bring home any trophies it certainly wasn’t for a lack of effort as he gave it his all in all three competitions. The biggest highlight of the night came from Garner’s freestyle run as he turned in another great run, sailing the ’41 Willys over the course with some great air and running well over two minutes in the performance.
There was no time to rest following St. Ignace as the team packed up and made the trek down to South Bend, Indiana for another show the next day. The tight confines of the St. Joseph 4-H Fair was a radically different challenge from the wide open course in St. Ignace, but Garner was up to the task and put on a great showing for his Hoosier State fans that came out in droves to see the stars of the Monster Truck Throwdown.
After South Bend was one of the team’s most highly anticipated stops of the year as they visited Mount Pleasant, Michigan’s Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort for Monster Truck Madness V. After being fans in the stands in years past, it was a special opportunity for the team to be competing in the event for their first time ever. A clear sign of their enthusiasm was when they brought the Garner’s Towing wrecker up to Mount Pleasant Thursday morning and proceeded to hang not just Over Bored, but also Avenger and Barbarian up in the air for a truly monstrous display! The display got plenty of attention from motorists as they drove by in awe at the sight of three monster trucks hanging in the air in front of the Soaring Eagle Casino.
While Over Bored got some air time with assistance of the wrecker on Thursday, the air time on Friday all came from a 540 cubic inch motor as Garner and the team put it all on the line against the strongest competition they’ve faced all year, on one of the toughest tracks they’ve ever seen. After an early exit in racing Garner let it all hang out with a career best performance in freestyle. The run was highlighted with the biggest air the truck has ever seen along with a great save following a harsh rebound landing over one of the bus stacks. After going well beyond two minutes in his freestyle, Garner would eventually succumb to a broken tie-rod but the run would take the lead for the time being. Good friend Jim Koehler and the Avenger would be the eventual freestyle winner, with Garner and Over Bored finishing second!
As the team returns home to the shop they’ll be hard at work getting Over Bored back to 100% as they gear up for their next event on July 18th in Ionia, Michigan with Monster Truck Throwdown. Be sure to check out where we’ll be this summer by viewing our schedule here.
After a busy first quarter to start off 2014 the Over Bored Monster Truck team was looking forward to starting off a great Spring and Summer season with some fantastic events on the schedule. The team spent several weeks working on new improvements to the truck, taking the knowledge learned from first quarter and applying it to make the truck even better for the rest of the year. The first event of the month was a special one as the team would get to do one of the most unique shows in the country, Monsters on the Beach, where trucks compete right on the Oceanfront in Virginia Beach. The hauler was packed with tons of extra parts and driver Jamey Garner was really looking forward to trying out the updated set up on the truck at big outdoor event.
The first of four events took place on Friday night but the team soon found troubles on the truck with motor problems that started to show up following the wheelie competition. Garner battled through and was able to freestyle and turn in some nice jumps but it became evident something wasn’t right in the engine. The initial diagnosis was a blown intake gasket. The crew worked feverishly to get the truck running again and was able to get the intake gasket replaced. As the truck fired up to head down for the pit party though it became apparent their problems were much worse than initially thought, as the motor slowly began to give up as Garner made his way to the pit party. It was a truly gut wrenching feeling for everyone involved as it became clear the motor was blown and Over Bored wouldn’t be able to compete the rest of the weekend. “It’s pretty frustrating. We came with tons of spare parts and even had the top half of the motor freshened up before the event but there just wasn’t enough time for a complete rebuild after first quarter,” said Deidra Ballard. “We’ve got a brand new 540 being built but it just couldn’t have gotten done in time for this weekend. We really wanted to do well here because it’s such a special event but unfortunately sometimes you’ll have these problems. That’s motorsports.”
A couple weeks later was Jamey Garner’s birthday and he got himself an awesome birthday present, a brand new motor for Over Bored just in time for the first Monster Truck Throwdown event of the season in Mansfield, Ohio. After all the disappointment in Virginia Beach the team was ready for a great weekend to kick off the Throwdown season and they would have just that. On Friday night Garner would be the fastest qualifier in racing, but overheating problems would keep him from making round one. After a quick radiator fan swap the truck was ready for freestyle where Garner got some nice air including a few good hits over the wheelie cars. On Saturday Garner came out blazing in freestyle with a fantastic run, soaring Over Bored into the air and one point shy of the freestyle victory to good friend Jim Kohler and the Avenger.
With a few weeks before the next event the Over Bored team will be going over the truck once more to get ready for a busy Summer stretch with Monster Truck Throwdown staring in St. Ignace, Michigan.
